Bring Outside, Inside!

Rainy days! What to do? After a recent Brisbane rainy day with little children, faces pressed up to the windows, I decided to bring the outside, inside. I couldn’t bare the frowny faces anymore, that look of sorrow like the backyard was made of lollies and mummy wasn’t letting them at it.
When I suggested we bring the trees and birds inside, I got a quizzical look from Miss Two. But soon, her face lit up!
I got some A4 paper from the printer, stuck it together to form a larger piece and got her helping me to draw a giant tree. Next, we drew some little birds and flew them to the tree to ‘hide from the rain’.
What else do trees need? Leaves of course! So we cut up some green scrap paper and glued it on. We had an afternoon of fun decorating our tree and flying our paper bird creations around the house and back to their home. With a one year old and a two year old participating in the fun, our finished creation in a mother’s eyes was a work of art, but really didn’t look anything like a tree with leaves and birds.
My solution was to create a blank canvas for them to work on next time; a printed tree with little birds to colour. The next day which was bright and sunny saw the request to play birds again, and this was the beginning of our new creation. We were even able to go out into the garden and collect some real leaves to add to our craft this time.
We have provided some downloads to make this easier so you can print them off I hope your Brisbane kids enjoy bringing their outside, inside as much as mine did.
