If you are looking for a unique and engaging art class in Brisbane for your children, then we think we have uncovered one of the best kept secrets around! Art Class Brisbane, a welcoming, inspiring and inclusive art space, combines your child’s love for a favourite pet or animal with an art session in their delightfully sweet ‘Paint Your Pet’ workshop. Brisbane Kids were invited to take part in this unique workshop with one of our Brisbane Kids, so check out our review below (as well as all of the wonderful reasons why we just can’t recommend it enough!).
Art Class Brisbane – Katie, The Artist
As we waited, happy little customers from the previous session filtered out and it was clear that Katie had developed a very close rapport with the regulars who were leaving. One parent, Emily, thanked Katie at length for accommodating her daughter for a make-up lesson from a missed regular weekday class. Emily raved about how personalised, friendly, nurturing and inspiring Katie is and the positive effects her art classes had had on her daughter, an eager regular to the studio.
Whilst it is a clear she is a talented artist, Katie’s background as an illustrator and designer for major Australian newspapers and television stations as well as her many gallery exhibitions speaking volumes, it becomes clear quite quickly that it is her personality and warmth that draws families here. She greets my own daughter with a wide smile, her animated face growing more excited as my daughter talks of her own love of drawing, and they instantly bond over the joys of being creative.
Art Class Brisbane – Paint Your Pet Workshop
When I was first asked if I wanted to check out the Art Class Brisbane’s ‘Paint Your Pet’ workshop with my daughter, I was instantly intrigued. As someone who loves all things arty, and with a daughter who equally enjoys being creative, the idea of an art class in Brisbane that centred around painting a favourite animal sounded perfect.
Running for two hours each Saturday morning from 10:30am, the Paint Your Pet class for kids is all about creating a canvas masterpiece of your own, where parents are encouraged to send in a photo or image of their child’s pet or favourite animal in the week prior to arriving. This allows Katie the time to reproduce a basic sketch of the animal onto a large canvas, ready for when the session actually starts.
Surrounded by wall art, adorned with a paint-speckled apron and set up on butcher paper-lined long benches, kids are then given ample space to begin their artwork. Far from being just a regular paint-whatever-you-like kind of session though, Katie is a hands-on artist who sits alongside the kids (quite often even painting her own image at the same time), gifting them with hints and tips about how to give their painting the most life as they go.
Katie’s patience, enthusiastic guidance and skill, coupled with the laid-back atmosphere of the studio (her small pet dog was seated quietly nearby – a huge attraction – and soft music played out in the background), meant that the two hours seemed to fly by. In that time, Katie taught my daughter about layering the colours, creating texture, not being too much of a perfectionist (ah, the art of painting over things!), as well as some other tricks of the trade to bring realism and detail to the image.
Kids are encouraged to bring along their own snacks and drinks, making the very comfortable session even more enjoyable. In between brush strokes and paint dips, my daughter patted the dog, wandered around to look at other paintings in progress, and chatted to Katie and nibbled on her treats. For me, the many delightful bakeries and cafes nearby (one right upstairs, past another wall decorated with Katie’s art) provided a great variety of baked sweets and hot coffee for me to enjoy while I waited.
Note: If you want to do a painting yourself or you have a child under 6 years with you, then you are more than welcome to book and join in as well. Otherwise, the space is only able to accommodate the kids that are painting. Parents can either drop off and pick up, or enjoy their free time nearby in a cafe or at the shops.
Art Class Brisbane Review – What We Thought
My daughter, an enthusiastic artist, is generally a little guarded and shy, but her face was lit up and her joy apparent from the moment she entered the studio. She loved Katie on the spot and the two of them had a great time working together and creating a painting of her favourite animal (her Aunty’s little dog). In particular, she loved learning new skills and tricks towards bringing realism to her painting and absolutely adored being in a studio that encouraged art, mess and creativity. Her enthusiasm continued long after we left too, with her request to possibly host her birthday party there later in the year and to also sign up for some term or school holiday workshops a hot topic.
From my point of view as a parent, this is the perfect Saturday morning activity for kids. Regardless of whether they are arty or not, all kids love to get creative and I know very few who aren’t infatuated with animals. Creating something in a relaxed atmosphere that they can take home and display in their room is a real winner too. With sport quite often taking up many Saturday mornings for families, having an option for the kid who is usually watching (bored) from the sidelines is a brilliant alternative worth considering.
The simple fact is, the colour that weaves itself along the floors and walls seeps straight into your soul the minute you enter the doorway to Art Class Brisbane, and it is like a smile that warms your heart long after you leave.
Art Class Brisbane – Other Art Classes and Workshops
Whilst the Paint Your Pet art class is the perfect weekend escape for kids, Katie also offers many other art classes and workshops for kids, teens and adults.
There is a full timetable available on their website of term time after school art classes, as well as the school holiday workshops on offer. Katie has family paint sessions at the studio, and for adults there is a very popular paint and sip session that can be booked and enjoyed amongst friends, glass of bubbly at the ready.
