The School is co-educational, non-denominational, small in size and presents a wonderful opportunity for those looking for child-centred, inquiry-based learning.
Compass Independent School Philosophy & Values
Compass Independent School’s philosophy focuses on the child’s learning journey. Their compass points are inquire, play, create and collaborate, and these emphasise their priorities for everyday learning.
Compass’s intercardinal points represent the School values of being caring, fair, open-minded and respectful, and being me, which they encourage throughout everyday interactions.
The Compass Approach
The style of teaching at Compass Independent School emphasises interaction with children. The teachers act as coaches, guiding, supporting and extending learning with a focus on the child’s level. Children benefit from small group learning in which they have quality time with their teachers.
Compass offers rich learning experiences that promote hands-on learning. Children enjoy baking, science experiments, creative projects and art. This is a stimulating environment that is responsive to children’s needs.
Compass Independent School is a vertical school with classrooms located on the 3rd floor of Building Z1. The classrooms are light filled and larger than typical classrooms with exciting spaces for learning, including a kitchenette and multiple break out rooms. Compass has lift access and embraces children with learning differences.
Outdoor Learning and Play
At Compass, children benefit from 90 minutes of daily outdoor learning and play. They are immersed in expansive local parkland and have daily opportunities for nature play, plus imaginative play, games and sports.
Compass Independent School offers multi-age classes where children of varied ages learn and play together over several years under the guidance of a teaching team. Children benefit from greater consistency, deeper insights from teachers, tailored learning to their level and stronger relationships.
Class Sizes and Teaching Team
In 2023, Compass will have one class of children from Prep to Year 5. This class has a maximum of 24 children with two teachers. From 2024, the School will offer Prep to Year 6.
Compass was developed over four years by a team of education experts, including primary school teachers, international educators and university researchers.
Compass Independent School is located at 8 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove. It is co- located on-campus at QUT within the Creative Industries Precinct.
“We are both extremely impressed with the offering and think that that many of the practices (such as inquiry based learning) are well advanced beyond what is usually offered in Brisbane.” – Jack, parent of Charlie and Leo
“We are choosing compass school because it offers deeply engaging and motivating learning opportunities. When children learn at their level and have creative opportunities, while building autonomy partnerships with teachers they are self motivated, curious, able to develop at their rate. Their confidence flourishes, they thrive.
The cross level classroom allows for children to both be teachers and learners, and build skills of contribution and leadership.
In 21 years as an educator I know this is what research tells us builds not just learners, but problem solvers, creatives and well adjusted adults.” – Carla, parent of Oscar
“Our 6 year old is a very curious, hands on learner who struggles with change. Alicia’s calm, comforting and encouraging personality has made our decision to move to Compass so easy. We are so excited to participate in all her ideas for integrating required learning into fun, exciting activities that will allow the children to expand on their interests.” – Ashley, parent of Bastian
