DESCRIPTION:The Premier’s Reading Challenge 2026\nThe Premier’s Reading Challenge champions reading with the goal of encouraging young Queenslanders to read for pleasure and learning\, to improve literacy and give them a brighter future. \nIt is an annual statewide initiative for Queensland state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9\, as well as children (aged up to 5 years) enrolled in an early childhood centre. \nGet involved\nKey dates\nRegistrations open: 27 April\nReading period commences for Prep to Year 9 students: 11 May\nEarly childhood participation period: 17 to 28 August\nReading period finishes for Prep to Year 9 students: 28 August\nCelebration Weeks: 2 to 13 November \nThe PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. DESCRIPTION:Families and kids can experience a unique piece of global art at the Museum of Brisbane when The Red Dress exhibition makes its first Australian appearance from July 2026 to September 2026. This award-winning project showcases incredible collaborative creativity\, uniting 380 international embroiderers to create one extraordinary Guinness World Record garment. \nThe Red Dress exhibition\nCollaborative creativity from 380 embroiderers in 51 countries interwoven into one garment. \nThe Red Dress is an award-winning global community art project conceived by British artist Kirstie Macleod\, spanning 14 years and uniting 380 embroiderers across 51 countries into a single\, extraordinary garment. Museum of Brisbane and Warwick Art Gallery will jointly exhibit the work in a significant coup for Queensland\, marking its first ever showing in Australia. \nOriginally designed to spark conversations about identity\, the project has evolved into a powerful platform for self-expression\, amplifying marginalised voices and addressing social issues through traditional embroidery and intricate stitchwork. From 2009 to 2023\, pieces of the dress travelled the globe\, embroidered by 367 women\, 11 men and two non-binary artists from 51 countries\, among them refugees\, asylum seekers\, survivors of war\, and disadvantaged women worldwide. The project carries local resonance too\, with Brisbane connections woven throughout. \nConstructed from 87 panels of burgundy silk dupion\, the completed dress weighs 6.8kg and holds a Guinness World Record for the largest collaborative embroidery project. It is estimated to contain between one and 1.5 billion stitches\, each one weighted with personal story and signifying the enduring link between artisans\, first-time embroiderers\, and diverse audiences around the world. \nBrisbane’s AllThreads community created a detailed and highly skilled embroidery for Australia’s contribution to the global project\, capturing the country’s unique landscape\, flora and fauna. \nOn display in Australia for the first time\, textile and embroidery artists and general audiences alike are invited to marvel at the delicate details of this deeply thought-provoking work. All 141 embroiderers with commissioned contributions received compensation\, along with a share of exhibition fees and merchandise sales. It offers Brisbane kids and parents a wonderful opportunity to explore a scenic sculpture trail and enjoy hands-on art demonstrations together. \nBrisbane Sculpture Festival 2026\nMt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens will come alive with creativity as the Brisbane Sculpture Festival returns\, turning the gardens into an inspiring outdoor gallery the whole family can enjoy. \nPresented by Sculptors Queensland\, the free event features both indoor and outdoor exhibitions showcasing works by some of Queensland’s most prominent sculptors\, from bold and contemporary to whimsical and thought-provoking. Every piece is available for purchase\, and visitors are encouraged to vote in the People’s Choice award for their favourites. A gold coin donation or raffle ticket purchase is appreciated. \nThe indoor exhibition is held at the Mt Coot-tha Auditorium from 1st to 9th August (open daily 10am to 4pm)\, where visitors can view works up close and speak directly with the sculptors. \nThe outdoor sculpture trail winds through the beautiful botanic gardens from 1st August to 30th October (open daily 10am to 4pm)\, with sculptures of all shapes and sizes tucked among the greenery. \nSculpture demonstrations will be held on selected dates throughout the festival\, and small group tours of the outdoor trail are available by appointment.
