5 Rainy Day Ideas for Kids

Rainy day ideas for Kids are part and parcel of being parents, when the skies open up and there is no way to get outside and cure the boredom.

Hopefully these Rainy day ideas for kids as given to us by our Guest Blogger Julie from Mother’s K.I.S.S will give you some ideas and inspiration. A Mother’s K.I.S.S./Kids Ideas: Simple & Sensational are resource books (only $15) with many simple ideas and information to keep children happy, busy and learning (0-12 yrs old). Head to her facebook page link above for details.

Rainy Day Ideas for Kids Number 1

Camp Inside!

Set up a small tent inside with the kids’ pillows, sleeping bags and torches. The kids can grab some of their favourite toys and board games. Make some easy yummy treats like chocolate crackles or honey joys to enjoy a little picnic inside. If you have young children, they might like to invite their teddies and soft toys to join in the picnic. If you don’t have a small tent, make a cubby house of sheets, blankets and pillows draped over some chairs.

Olympic Games

Hold your very own Olympic games inside. Be creative with the events. Eg. Balance beam on a piece of string, slither/crawling races across the room, pillowcase sack race, jump from one string line to another (gradually making it wider), throw a teddy in a hula hoop, bounce ping pong balls into a cup, throw socks into a wasterpaper basket etc. Make your own “gold” medals by cutting out some cardboard circles, colouring or painting them and threading on to a piece of string or ribbon.

Plastic Cup Stacking Challenge

A $2 packet can bring so much fun! Stack the plastic cups as high as you can, in a pyramid shape, or for a greater challenge try a circular shape. When you’ve got to the very top, try and pack them up by sliding the cups down into each other as quick as you can!

Juggling Balls

Make your own juggling balls by pouring rice or sand into a balloon (not blown up) with a funnel. When full, tie a knot in the balloon and trim the top. Get a 2nd balloon of a different colour, cut off the neck of the balloon and snip some small holes in the round part of the balloon. Slide the 2nd balloon over the 1st balloon to create a ball. Make a second one and practise juggling. Make a 3rd juggling ball if you’re really talented!

Fruit and Vegetable Printing

Cut some raw vegies in half eg. potatoes, carrots (even broccoli if you want some interesting texture). Pour a small amount of paint on a lid eg. icecream or other plastic container lid. Pour a different coloured paint on each lid, so that the kids have different colours that they can make patterns with their vegies. Place upside down vegie in the paint and then place on the paper to make the print. After they’ve had fun with the vegies, try the fruit. Eg. Cut apple in half (leave seeds in), oranges, bananas etc.
