I wont pretend to talk in the third person about myself, instead let me tell you a bit about me and how 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came about. At the time the domain name 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for purchase I was a stay at home mum in the middle of a degree centred around journalism and PR. a couple of years earlier I had been contemplating returning to my previous career in marketing management and for a while I even tried. 3 months into a new role and it was clear that I had no passion for my old life and to make the decision to quit easier, my almost 2 year old at the time was not coping with childcare. So, as a family we made the decision for me to return to becoming a stay at home mum. About 1 years later or so.. 110.232.142.129/~brisba22 came up for sale. My friends had often commented on my ability to know exactly what was happening in Brisbane for kids. I had my son enrolled in some awesome activities and we often visited some great destinations. I loved finding fun things for us to doโ€ฆ

Vaccination rules for child care

Last Updated: October 16, 2015

The State Government will introduce legislation this year to give child care centres the power to reject children who aren’t fully vaccinated.

It’s part of a move to boost immunisation rates which fell to just over 92 per cent late last year, below the 95 per cent target needed to provide ‘safe heard immunity’.

The Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the government will consult with all the stakeholders before the plan goes to Parliament.

The head of parent advocacy group The Parenthood – Jo Briskey – has welcomed the government’s move.

The numbers are staggering

Ms Briskey said vaccination rates are especially concerning in Queensland, which has four out of the five regions with the highest number of parents registered as conscientious objectors to vaccination.

“We already know that child care centres are a hotbed for illnesses – colds, stomach bugs, children can come home with something different every week.

“But to run the risk of adding potentially life threatening diseases into the mix, old-world diseases that are fully preventable by vaccinations, this just isn’t acceptable and we expect action to be taken to help protect our children,” she said.

Surely education is the beginning

The Parenthood has called on the Federal Health Minister to take urgent action to boost immunisation rates.

It wants a national campaign to educate parents about the safety and efficiency of immunisation and federal vaccination requirements for parents enrolling their children in child care or school.

The State Opposition said it wants to see proof that turning unvaccinated children away from child care centres would help increase immunisation rates.

There are already some measures in place to encourage parents to vaccinate their children.

Immunisation for children under the age of seven is a requirement for the Child Care Benefit which subsidises care costs.

Exemptions are granted for people who have a personal, philosophical, religious or medical belief against immunisation and have a submitted a form signed by a doctor to the Childhood Immunisation Register.

There are also exemptions for children who can’t be immunised for medical reasons.

Ok, so the numbers quoted here by Jo Briskey don’t make sense. She says, โ€œRight now there are one in five children across Australia who are not fully vaccinated because their parents have chosen against it.โ€ But earlier in the piece it says that we have a 92% vacc rate. So someone here can’t count. 1 in 5 is 20% meaning 80% are covered. But then 92% is also touted and seems to be the consensus. 92% is just under 1 in 19, which is a far cry from 1 in 5. So what is going on? One would almost think someone is deliberately trying to mislead readers or is this a simple mistake?

โ€œBut to run the risk of adding potentially life-threatening diseases into the mix, old-world diseases that are fully preventable by vaccinations, this just isnโ€™t acceptable and we expect action to be taken to help protect our children.โ€ Another blurring of the lines… so if as this sentence claims that vaccinations fully prevent old world diseases, isn’t the risk then borne by the unvaccinated ? Just asking… confused.

thomas I think where you are confused is the term “fully vaccinated” – i believe 1 in 5 have not received ALL their vaccinations – with the other amount referring to selective vaccination where they choose not to have specific vaccinations by choice OR they simply just dont keep up with the schedule. I hope that helps.
And no. There are children who for various medical reasons cant be vaccinated and there are diseases that may impact on pregnant women or in cases where immunity no longer exists for whatever reason- so the risk is borne by all. And especially borne by newborn babies too young to receive immunisations.
