Baby and Toddler Swimming Classes

There are four Baby / Toddler levels at E.D.S (Itty bitty, Baby 1, Baby 2 and Toddler). Each of these levels is based on ages, with all activities centred around the average childโ€™s cognitive and physical development –

Itty Bitty, 3 months – 6 months (FREE)

AIM: Water Familiarisation & Conditioning

In Emily Drummond Swimming’s FREE Itty Bitty class, your little swimmer will start to become familiar with the water and the instructor will start the process of conditioning.

It is important that you are patient with your child in this phase, as this is all new to them! Emily Drummond Swimming encourage you to practice all of the activities, as this is essential to your little one’s development (the best time to do this is at bathtime).

Baby 1, 6 months – 15 months ($15)

AIM: Breath Control & Submersion

Just a step up from the Itty Bitty Class, is Emily Drummond Swimming’s Baby 1 Class. This is where you will slowly start to submerge your little swimmer into the water and they will begin to learn through exploration.

Babies can read facial expressions, so it is important that you remain calm, always smile, laugh, and encourage them.

Baby 2, 15 months – 24 months ($15)

AIM: Free Floating & Propulsion

Emily Drummond Swimming’s Baby 2 class is where your little swimmer will start to use their arms and legs to propel themselves in the water. Instead of a parent catching their little swimmer, parents are encouraged to offer minimal assistance and have your little one grip you and pull themselves out of the water.

At around 2 years old, children learn fear, so it is important that parents encourage exploration in the water with a positive and calm attitude.

Toddler, 24 months + ($15)

AIM: Independence

The final class for your little swimmer is Emily Drummond Swimming’s Toddler Class (you will still be in the water). Your teacher will take a more hands-on approach and you will take a step back. These lessons will start preparing your child to be more independent so that they are ready for classes with you no longer in the pool.

There may be tears, as some little ones may not want to do more activities with the teacher and that is ok! It is important that you remain calm and work with the teacher to help build confidence and independence.

Learn To Swim Classes ($20-25)

Because everyone has different swimming abilities, it is important that a swim school has different levels so that all students feel comfortable. Before the first swimming lesson all children will need to do a quick assessment so that they are placed in the correct level.

Level 1, 36 months +

AIM: Water Familiarisation (Older Children)

Level 1 is aimed at children who are 3 years and older who are not comfortable in the water or who have not done lessons before. Children will learn basic paddling and kicking with the focus being on water familiarisation.

Level 2

AIM: Water Safety

For the children that have completed Emily Drummond Swimming’s Baby and Toddler classes, Level 2 is the first class where a parent is not in the water with them.

Level 3

AIM: Basic Freestyle

In Emily Drummond Swimming’s Level 3 class, your child will start to learn basic freestyle. In this level there will be a focus on kicking. For the first few weeks of the term, a large part of the lesson will be kicking followed by ‘Big’ freestyle arms. Children will only be taught breathing later on in the term, once kicking and ‘Big’ freestyle arms have been achieved.

Level 4

AIM: Freestyle and Backstroke introduction

Just a step up from Level 3, Emily Drummond Swimming’s Level 4 level aims to improve your child’s freestyle by mastering their breathing. Along with mastering their freestyle, they will start to learn basic backstroke, with the goal of completing 25 metres of each stroke at the end of the term.

Testimonials

Emily is an incredibly patient, kind and supportive swim coach. When my three year old daughter started classes she was unable to put her face in the water. Now, nine months later, she can swim independently, she feels confident in the water and is enthusiastic to attend her weekly swimming lessons. Emily has become part of our familyโ€™s village in supporting our childrens’ development and we are looking forward to our younger daughter starting classes with Emily soon. I highly recommend Emily.” – Kirri
