Bring the kids along to the Ipswich Art Gallery (IAG) this summer and be immersed in a rainbow-adorned world where innovation and imagination come second only to fun! Running until mid-February 2026, Move It is the latest offering from IAG Kids and allows visitors to experiment with movement from the building of LEGO race cars to the engineering of giant ball runs and building of wind tube creations.
Move It – What to Expect
Move It, located in the childrenโs section of the modern and sleek Ipswich Art Gallery, is a thoroughly hands-on experience which explores multiple STEAM principles such as creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.
Upon entry to this colourful and inviting space, youโll encounter a range of interactive activities including a huge, LEGO car ramp which is perfectly poised for some epic races and high-flying spins. Visitors are encouraged to design their very own race car of red and yellow to be tested down the steep track and clear a treacherous launch gap at the bottom. A journey of trial and error ensues as children adjust and adapt their vehicles brick by brick to achieve their goals. A black and white checkered flag adds a realistic touch and boosts the role-playing factor.
A pair of high-powered, wind tunnels provide another platform for open ended fun and exploration of movement. Choose from a range of recycled materials like paper cups, straws, feathers and Styrofoam balls and create an invention to take flight in thrilling air-filled tubes. Whether they float, fly, hover or dance is really anyoneโs guess but one thing for certain is this activity is big on entertainment value and gets little bodies moving (along with a side of laughter!). Feel free to bring your flying creations home or leave them behind for others to enjoy.
For budding engineers and curious minds, the DIY ball run is sure to be a popular drawcard and provide countless moments of learning and engagement. Use wooden pegs and masking tape to construct a track from everyday items such as pipes, tubes and funnels and watch as your ball attempts to make it from one end to the other. This tactile station is ideal for older children and promotes plenty of ways to collaborate with parents, problem solve and work towards a shared outcome.
Move It – Our Review
The IAG Kidsโ Move It exhibit is set to become a huge hit this summer with its broad appeal, high interactivity and variety of simple yet engaging stations. While weโve found previous IAG Kids exhibits to be entertaining and thought provoking, we found Move It to be particularly enjoyable largely due to its hands-on nature and playability.
Although the LEGO car ramp was a strong favourite, our mini crafters were completely captivated by the wind tunnels and sent many, varied inventions spinning, moving and bouncing around the tubes. As a parent, it was especially satisfying to observe the perseverance of the LEGO car builders and their cheers of delight as their cars successfully soared down the track.
Be sure to set aside a few hours to enjoy this wholesome activity which goes hard on the fun while also being free of cost and accessible for all. We also love that it provides a great, rainproof option for playdates and a perfect escape for those scorching hot Ipswich days.
