Hologram Workshop @ QUBIC

14 April
Free
Hologram Workshop @ QUBIC

Kids and their families are invited to explore the quantum properties of light at this fun, interactive science workshop in April 2026, the perfect way to celebrate World Quantum Day. Participants will enjoy hands-on STEM activities for children, including creating their own 3D hologram to take home, while discovering how light behaves like both a wave and a particle. Through engaging, hands-on science activities, children will learn how interference and diffraction work together to produce the stunning 3D images we call holograms, making this family-friendly science workshop a unique opportunity to explore one of physics’ most fascinating concepts in a fun and accessible way.

Hologram Workshop @ QUBIC

This World Quantum Day, kids and their families are invited to explore the quantum properties of light at a fun, interactive workshop.

Participants will make their own 3D hologram to take home and discover how light behaves like both a wave and a particle, and how interference and diffraction create the amazing 3D images we call holograms.

Registration is essential as spaces are limited, with a maximum of 4 tickets per booking (1 adult, up to 3 children). This event is suitable for ages 8 and above, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

This event is proudly brought to you by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC).

Following the workshop, take a tour of the UQ Physics Museum and see the famous Pitch Drop Experiment. There is also a fantastic display of Jewellery and Metalwork inspired by Physics by Dr Margaret Wegener, Senior Lecturer in Physics who has a particular research interest in developing innovative and effective ways to learn physics. Margaret has been a maker in metal for more than two decades and exhibits regularly with the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Queensland.

What is quantum science?
Quantum physics is a science that studies how the tiniest things in the universe – like atoms and particles – behave, and it turns out they act in very strange ways that don’t follow the usual rules of everyday life!

What is World Quantum Day?
World Quantum Day is an annual celebration promoting public awareness and understanding of quantum science and technology around the world.

About QUBIC
The ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC) is the first national Centre globally pioneering a new era of quantum-powered tools to explore and manipulate biology at the molecular level. We aim to create a unique, vibrant, multidisciplinary environment for transformational, collaborative research at the very cutting edge. The Centre has nodes at The University of Queensland, The University of Melbourne, the University of Technology Sydney, the University of Wollongong and Flinders University. We seek to drive fundamental knowledge and innovation across health, energy and agriculture. Our research program develops quantum technologies that go far beyond what is possible today, from portable brain imagers to superfast single protein sensors.
