National Walk Safely to School Day returns in May 2026, encouraging Brisbane families to embrace active travel and pedestrian safety. This annual event promotes healthy habits for primary school students by reducing traffic congestion and teaching vital road skills. Whether walking the whole way or parking further away, kids can enjoy a safer, greener commute.
Walk Safely to School Day 2026
Now in its 27th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual initiative that encourages all primary school students to walk and commute safely to school. Managed by the Pedestrian Council of Australia, the day highlights the health, safety, transport, and environmental benefits of walking.
Key Objectives
Health: Encouraging at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily to help combat childhood obesity.
Safety: Teaching vital road-crossing skills and reinforcing that children under 10 should always hold an adult’s hand.
Environment: Reducing car dependency and traffic congestion around school zones to create cleaner air.
Transport: Promoting the use of public transport and active travel.
How to Participate
For Families: Walk your child to school! If you live too far away, try “Park and Walk” – park the car at least 10 minutes away from the school and walk the rest of the way.
For Schools: Register your school on the official website to receive promotional materials. Many schools host a “Healthy Breakfast” on the morning of the event to celebrate.
Road Safety Tip: Use the “Stop, Look, Listen, Think” method every time you cross the road.
School Incentives:
Schools that register and share their stories/photos of the day can often enter to win one of several $250 Woolworths vouchers to help fund healthy school breakfasts or future wellbeing initiatives.
