Kadampa Meditation Centre Brisbane is now running meditation and Buddhism classes for kids! These classes include simple Buddhist teachings and meditations that revolve around children’s everyday experiences. They are designed to help them see things in a way that makes them calmer and happier. Classes also include a craft activity based on that day’s topic.

The suggested age range for these classes is 5-12 years. Children are to be accompanied by an adult.

Kadampa Meditation Centre Brisbane is located in the inner suburbs of Brisbane, and is only a 10 min walk from Central train station, making it very accessible by public transport. On Sundays, free on-street parking is also available.

Class Structure

When you arrive, you will be greeted by the centre’s volunteers, who will give you a name tag, and you will be shown around the meditation centre so you feel comfortable and can get to know each other.

The first part of the session is held in the meditation room, where you will need to take your shoes off before you enter. There are meditation cushions on the floor set out in a circle for the children to sit on, with chairs provided for the parents.

Your child’s meditation class teacher will then present a few methods to help each child calm their mind and gain simple tools to deal with negative feelings. Classes also include a short discussion about everyday experiences relevant to children.

Following this, the group will be led in a short guided breathing meditation. This gives each child an opportunity to practice training in self-control, both inside and out, in their thoughts and physical actions. Meditations are no longer than 10 minutes. No previous experience is necessary.

The session will then move into the lounge area, where a small snack is provided for the children (such as some cut fruit and a drink).

To conclude, the group will enjoy a group project that helps to give them something to “take away” from the class.
