Play on Stage is a leading youth drama studio and production company based in Brisbane, providing young people with a space to express their creativity and let their voices be heard.
About Play on Stage
Play on Stage was founded by Brisbane-based artist and educator Virag Dombay as a youth drama studio and production company that uses the arts to empower young people.
Whether itโs through term-time classes, school holiday programs, full-scale productions, or creative workshops, Play on Stage supports young people in building confidence and finding their voice. Their warm, talented facilitators are dedicated to fostering an inclusive space where Brisbaneโs children and teens can explore performance, develop skills, form friendships, and create unforgettable experiences.
Play on Stage believes deeply in the value of the arts and drama as a pathway for young people to express themselves, explore their identity, and connect through shared storytelling. Every young person should have the opportunity to step into the spotlight, and at Play on Stage, that spotlight is theirs.
Youth Drama Studio
Play on Stage runs acting and playwriting classes each school term for both primary students and teens. Their approach is inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, placing young people at the centre of their own creative journey.
The focus is on nurturing each participant’s individual imagination, with outcomes that include strong performance abilities and growing confidence in self-expression. Students experience every part of the creative process, including directing, writing, performing, and above all, enjoying themselves along the way.
Classes begin in the first week of each school term and run for nine weeks. Primary-aged sessions take place from 3:30pm to 5:00pm on weekdays, with the studio open from 3:00pm to welcome students. The full term costs $300, and there are a range of classes available throughout the week.
Theatre Productions
Play on Stage mainstage shows are built around the voices and perspectives of young performers. These productions offer something for audiences of all ages, highlighting the creativity and skill of Brisbaneโs youth on stage.
Published Plays
Play on Stage creates and distributes youth-focused scripts and performance texts, available for purchase by educators and theatre groups. Their collection features professionally developed works that are ready to be incorporated into your teaching or programming.
Workshops and Residencies for Schools
Play on Stage delivers engaging programs within school settings, catering to both primary and high school students. Whether you’re after a one-off workshop or a longer-term residency, their offerings are flexible to suit your schoolโs goals and timetable.
Testimonials
“Both of my children have been attending Play on Stage for a few years now, and the program just keeps on getting better. Virag, Harry and their team have truly made it their lives’ mission to pass on their love of stage craft, playwriting and performance to the next generation. They have created an environment that encourages self-expression and experimentation, making their young actors feel comfortable while at the same time encouraging them to push their own boundaries. Please note: This is a program tailored to the needs of creative children, not to the need of stage parents – which is fabulous and results in showcases that are random, colourful and deeply entertaining.” – Play on Stage parent
