What is RAMSR?
A different kind of ‘music class’
Developed, tried and tested through research right here in Brisbane!
We know that around 30% of 3-5 year old children struggle with the kinds of self regulation skills required for a successful transition into formal schooling.
What if helping young children develop their self-regulation skills could be as simple as moving, making music and finding a rhythm together?
RAMSR (Rhythm & Movement for Self-Regulation) is an evidence-based program that uses rhythm, music and movement to support young children’s developing self-regulation skills.
Through fun, structured activities, children practise skills such as paying attention, waiting, stopping and starting, remembering instructions, controlling impulses and coordinating their movements with others.
RAMSR was developed by researchers, early childhood and Neurologic Music Therapy professionals from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and has been specifically designed for young children in the years prior to formal schooling. Research has found positive outcomes for children’s self-regulation, executive function, school readiness, social development and behaviour.
Why might my child benefit?

Self-regulation is a big part of being ready to learn, play and participate.
Children are constantly learning how to:
- listen and pay attention
- manage their impulses
- wait for their turn
- follow instructions
- move their bodies with control
- adapt when something changes
- participate alongside other children
- recognise and respond to different levels of energy and arousal.
RAMSR gives children repeated opportunities to practise these skills through rhythm and movement in a way that is active, social and fun.
RAMSR is already being used in early childhood settings

RAMSR is designed so that children’s own educators can deliver the program within their everyday early childhood setting after completing RAMSR training.
That means RAMSR doesn’t have to be an extra activity brought in by a specialist. It can become part of the rhythm of the week at your child’s own kindy or early learning centre.
RAMSR training has been completed by over 4,000 early childhood professionals, and the program has been designed so that educators do not need musical training or previous music experience to deliver it.
Don’t have RAMSR at your child’s centre?
Your child’s centre can offer it.
If you think RAMSR would be a great fit for your child’s kindy or early learning centre, you can pass the information on to your Centre Director or Educational Leader.
RAMSR offers training for early childhood professionals, giving educators the knowledge, resources and session plans they need to confidently deliver RAMSR with children.
A RAMSR trainer can come directly to your child’s centre and provide a full-day professional development workshop for the team. We also hold regular training days in Brisbane which individual educators can attend.
There is also online training available for educators who prefer to complete the program at their own pace.
No musical experience is required.

Why RAMSR?

RAMSR brings together research, music, rhythm and movement in a practical program that children genuinely enjoy.
It was first designed and piloted in 2016 by Professor Kate Williams and her colleagues at Queensland University of Technology, drawing on research across music therapy, music education, neuroscience and child development.
Today, RAMSR is being used in early childhood settings across Australia and internationally.
Movement. Music. Rhythm. Regulation.
and importantly… Research. You won’t find a more thoroughly researched, evidence-based program in Brisbane for your child.
