Aussie Bird Count
The Aussie Backyard Bird Count is Australia’s largest citizen science project, inviting people of all ages to head outdoors and discover the amazing birdlife in their own backyards, parks, and local green spaces.
Organised by BirdLife Australia and the Birds in Backyards program, the annual count runs during National Bird Week and helps build a vital picture of Australia’s bird populations. The data collected supports important conservation work to protect our unique feathered friends.
In 2025, the Aussie Backyard Bird Count will take place from 20–26 October, with a goal of counting more than a million birds in just seven days. It’s a fun and rewarding way for families, schools, and communities to connect with nature while contributing to real science.
Register for the Aussie Bird Count and submit a count between 20-26 October to go in the draw to win a prize. From bird books, eco-friendly gear, to fine art and more, there’s a prize for every kind of bird lover.
Taking part is simple:
- Spend about 20 minutes in your chosen outdoor space, whether it’s your backyard, local park, schoolyard, national park, or beach.
- Record the birds you see using the free Aussie Bird Count app or the online form. The app includes a handy field guide to help identify species.
- Submit your results and be part of this nationwide effort.
- Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or a first-time spotter, every count makes a difference. Gather the kids, grab your binoculars (or just your keen eyes), and join thousands of Australians in celebrating and protecting our incredible birdlife.
