How to create your own fun kids’ scavenger hunt for free
Creating fun childhood memories doesn’t have to cost the earth. In fact, as we all know, some of the best things in life are free. And Brisbane Kids scavenger hunts are one of these fun and engaging free memory makers.
Recently we printed off the Brisbane Kids Pre-Reader scavenger hunt and set to work creating a carry bag for our goodies. We pasted the hunt on one side of an A4 piece of paper and then stapled it to another piece of A4 paper, leaving an end open to insert our finds. Next, we decorated the bags with our own drawings and added pipe cleaners for handles. We were ready to go.
But, wait—not before a top up of fuel! Using fresh cut up fruit, the children created wild animal, insect and plant pictures before devouring their snacks—ready to head off on the scavenger hunt.
We set off through the local state forest (though even your backyard or neighbourhood will provide all or most of these treasures). The children raced ahead, trying to be the first to find an item on their lists. They cheered each other on as they found treasure after treasure. And soon they had filled their bags.
This simple exercise had the kids looking and examining the world around them. Discovering things that they normally run straight past. They inspected rocks, feeling their surfaces and trying to find an elusive smooth pebble. They pulled up grass and flowers and hunted around tree roots for seeds. We discussed the difference between a twig and a stick and had fun looking for a round leaf that seemed to not want to be found.
Whilst we stopped and took the time to enjoy nature and the world around us, we discovered things we hadn’t noticed before. We found a bird nest, a ground cover plant with heart shaped leaves and a fairy hollow.
When we arrived home we used our fresh natural treasures to create a picture, and then took our finds out into our back yard and returned them to nature.
This is an excellent way to spend quality time with your children for free and I’m sure you will discover much more than just what is on the Scavenger Hunt list. Happy hunting!!
