Discover a slice of paradise with a side of fun at Happy Valley Playground at Bulcock Beach in Caloundra. When the sun is shining the sky is blue, the water is shimmering and there is plenty of shade and adventures to be had at this nautical themed playground by the water.
Happy Valley Playground
Happy Valley Playground, part of Clarke Place Park, is a favourite play space among locals and visitors for very good reason.
This sand-based playground, perched on the edge of the crystal-clear waters of Pumicestone Passage, offers a variety of play equipment perfect for climbing, crawling, spinning, and sliding. With loads of opportunities for imaginative play as well, you can see why families keep coming back to this Sunshine Coast playground time and time again.
Mostly shaded by surrounding trees and shade sails, and often with a gentle sea breeze, Happy Valley playground is worth the visit at any time of the year. Two main structures will immediately capture the childrenโs attention – the wooden lighthouse and the large pirate ship.
In a nod to the historical Caloundra Lighthouse, you will find a wooden lighthouse structure and fort at the centre of this play space. Underneath the lighthouse imaginative play is fostered with a Happy Valley Fish and Chip play shop front, a lighthouse keeperโs clock and more. Further up the lighthouse you can marvel at colourful paintings depicting the Caloundra Lighthouse, accompanied by some fun facts (Did you know the Caloundra Lighthouse was active from 1896 โ 1968!?)
A climbing wall and climbing net transport park goers to the top of the lighthouse where they can cast an eye over the surrounding area before sliding back down to land on a slippery slide. An alternative access point is via a ramp and bridge, which is also fun.
The other captivating play structure is the wooden pirate ship, which appears sunken into the sand, making it the perfect location for little and big kids to play in. Steer the pirate ship to safety or slip down the pole or slide to search for treasure in the sand below.
Elsewhere around the playground you will find a bank of swings (nest, standard, you-and-me and toddler), a seesaw, seated carousel, spinning bucket and rockers.
To round out this seaside playground you will find several options for picnicking, including covered and uncovered picnic tables, BBQโs, plenty of grass to sit on and of course the all-important toilet facilities. Oh and did we mention the stunning views of Pumicestone Passage and the beach.
Imagination Factor
Imaginative play is encouraged at this nautical themed playground, where children can pretend they are pirates or seafarers playing in and on the wooden pirate ship. Over at the Lighthouse structure little ones will enjoy manning the play shop fronts serving fish and chips or perhaps being a lighthouse keeper.
Accessibility
Unfortunately, the Happy Valley Playground is not considered accessible due to the sand base that surrounds the equipment. There is however a seated carousel, nest swing and you-and-me (face-to-face) swing in this mostly shaded playground.
There are plenty of accessible pathways surrounding the playground, and along the foreshore, which form part of the Caloundra Coastal Walk, which is pleasant at any time of the year.
A variety of picnic facilities and accessible toilets, with baby change facilities are located next to the playground, as is accessible parking spaces.

The Queensland Air Museum is also located in Caloundra, and is an interesting place to visit, especially if you have an aviation fan in the house.
What We Thought of Happy Valley Playground
This playground has a wonderful local feel to it, made even better by the local history and facts dotted around the equipment, including some paintings of the iconic Caloundra Lighthouse.
There is plenty of opportunity for climbing, imaginative play and spinning at this playground, though it is probably a little better suited to toddlers and young primary school children, rather than older children.
How to Get Here
