The latest exhibition from Ipswich Art Gallery Kids (IAG Kids) presents a kaleidoscopic collection of hands on experiences which focus on the simple yet striking interactions between colour and light.
LightPlay, running from 28th March to 12th July 2026, takes everyday items and brings them to life through the use of lighting and the power of big imaginations. This free of cost, dazzling display is a big crowd pleaser and one to add to your must do list for playdates, catch ups and school holiday entertainment.
LightPlay – What to Expect
IAG Kids is a creative sanctuary, located within the chic Ipswich Art Gallery, where kids are encouraged to explore, build and play in an environment designed just for them.
Upon entry to this dedicated children’s section, you’ll be met by a calm darkness speckled with jewels of light coming from the projected images and brightly lit play tables.
Taking inspiration from the child-centred philosophy of Reggio Emilia and sustainability ethos of REmida, is an installation consisting of overhead projectors and a vibrant array of recycled materials.
These otherwise plain objects such as cups, utensils and discarded plastics are illuminated to create stunning visuals reminiscent of an art gallery wall. The exploration of angles, layers and depth lead to infinite creative outcomes and opportunities to experiment with light in real time.
Dotted around the space, are glowing, cylindrical tables covered with sparkling treasures for little hands to enjoy. Use a basket and collect a personally curated handful of gems, translucent stones, animals and other fascinating specimens to be arranged on the bright, round surfaces. This tactile activity allows young visitors to explore the functionality of different pieces in an open-ended style of play and ignite their inner creativity.
A powered peg board shines radiantly in the corner and is accompanied by hundreds of crystalline pegs in every shade of the rainbow. Easy for small hands to grasp, these pegs can be placed in holes to form any number of patterns and pictures. The results are visually impressive while also promoting collaborative play and the development of fine motor skills.
Other stations include a motion activated floor projection (great for movement and dance) plus a camera-to-wall projection for an imaginary play set up.
LightPlay – Our Review
A visit to Ipswich Art Gallery Kids always leaves us feeling inspired and LightPlay delivers this feeling in spades.
The dimness of the main lighting brings a relaxing vibe which is delightfully interrupted by the ever changing rivers of colour which stream throughout the room as children interact with the different elements. The overhead projectors are the star attraction offering so many ways to play and engage with light while also providing a little hint of nostalgia.
For children who love admiring shiny, pretty things (look, who doesn’t?) the light-boxes open the possibility for hours of fun. We used the see-through stones to create flowers and studied the peculiar looking resin oddities with keen interest. It is clear much consideration has been given to designing a space which is toddler friendly while simultaneously appealing to a primary school aged audience too.
A focus on fun, environmental sustainability and learning through play are among the many factors which make IAG kids a real winner and keep us coming back time and time again. Friendly staff are also on hand to help get those creative juices flowing and add to the warmth of what is always a memorable family outing.
