Picnic shelters with beautiful river views, a regular coffee van and a great, modern playground – Jindalee Boat Ramp Park ticks all the boxes for kid-friendly fun in the Jindalee area. The playground features a unique and challenging climbing structure plus a free table tennis table and large dog park to keep the family entertained for hours.
Jindalee Boat Ramp Park Playground
The Jindalee Boat Ramp Park is located off Mount Ommaney Drive overlooking the iconic Brisbane River and its wonky, flood affected trees. While recent devastation in the area has caused the permanent closure of the boat ramp, the playground remains a popular destination due to its welcoming green spaces, shady picnic spots and well-designed playground area.
The main playground is a vibrant mix of orange and grey with generously sized platforms and a variety of access points. Little legs should be able to scale the stairs with ease while older children can attempt the trickier rock climbing wall and curved ladder. Once at the top, climbers are met with an open slide which is both speedy and safe with a soft rubber base for any rough landings. Another stand out feature is the unusually shaped climbing structure which consists of a number of hanging loops placed in a suspended arch configuration. Built into this structure is a bunch of other interesting features such as spinning circle poles and a singular, curved climbing bar. To complete the playground is the essential swing set, mini bouncer, spinners and a cool set of rubber boulders for jumping and imaginary play.
Another inclusion which is sure to excite Brisbane kids is a free to use table tennis table. Good hearted locals often leave a collection of ping pong balls but best to bring your own paddles to avoid disappointment. The surrounding parklands also provide the perfect setting for a great family day out with plenty of picnic shelters, BBQs, heaps of green space and the serenity of the nearby river. There’s also a small amount of workout equipment for gym buffs and a fenced off-leash dog area for your furry friends to enjoy.
Food and Drink Options Near Jindalee Boat Ramp Park
The Licketysplit Cafe food van is a bit of a hidden treasure providing delicious coffee and sweet treats to playground visitors four days a week. This cute, retro looking van is a big drawcard for families and parents’ group who can enjoy a hot or cold drink all within the same vicinity of the playground. Bring your picnic rugs and set up under one of the big, leafy trees while the kids explore the playground or enjoy the lawn games kindly provided by the cafe. Licketysplit is at the park on Mondays, Fridays and weekends – check their social media for opening hours and regular updates.
Imagination Factor
Young imaginations are sure to get a workout at Jindalee Boat Ramp Park with its interesting play equipment designed for open ended play and problem solving. The unique climbing structure is the real centre point for imaginary play as there’s no clear way to engage with this equipment which leads to endless participation methods. The abstract design also creates opportunities for story telling alongside the colourful boulders and picturesque, riverside backdrop. Animal lovers will also find inspiration in the natural environment with bird filled trees of rainbow lorikeets, inquisitive kookaburras and elusive tawny frogmouths.
Jindalee Boat Ramp Park Accessibility
The park is situated on somewhat hilly terrain but is connected by a gently sloping, concrete path which is wheelchair and pram friendly. Accessible toilets are located near the road and in roughly the middle of the parklands. There’s a large car park located near the old boat ramp and dog park but for best playground access try on street parking at the southern end of Mount Ommaney Drive.
