Relax in the gorgeous community space which surrounds the Mitchelton Library on the northside of Brisbane. Connect with family and friends as you enjoy the thoughtful playground, shady outdoor space, a café on the deck, community garden and of course the cosy library.
Mitchelton Library Park
Combine a playdate with a library visit at Brisbane City Council’s Mitchelton Library. Not only is there a wonderful public library there is a fun playground, which is popular with parent groups, playdates and after school visits.
From the back deck of the library you will presented with a large grassed area where picnics, ball games and running around can occur and the playground.
The playground (which is unfenced) has a variety of equipment for all ages. A fun orange and green coloured fort, designed with primary school aged children in mind, will see children, climbing, crawling and slipping their way over the it.
There is plenty of opportunities for climbing with rope nets, poles, and climbing walls. Once at the top of the fort excited children can make their way through a series of tunnels before sliding down one of the two slides (one of which is a covered tunnel slide).
Toddlers haven’t been forgotten either with a designated toddler fort with steps, play panels, climbing structures and a slide.
A seesaw, low-to-ground play panels, bank of swings and an accessible carousel complete this area, which have a combination of soft fall and chip bark as their base.
When it is time rest there is a decent sized covered picnic shelter with tables and electric BBQ’s and a water tap. If you prefer, there are a number of bench seats dotted around the park, some under shady trees which is the perfect spot to rest on a hot day.
Kids will love running around the spacious grassed area, kicking a ball or playing games with their friends. Two netball goal rings can be found to the side of this grassed area and a basketball half-court is also there too.
Mitchelton Library
Either before or after you have had a play in the park, don’t forget to visit the wonderful Mitchelton Library.
Inside the air-conditioned library, there is a dedicated children’s area with stacks of books and comfy seats to snuggle up and share a story. Other interactive games can also be found in this space and will entertain the kiddos between browsing books.
Like most libraries, regular story times, First 5 Forever events and other fun workshops are held at the library and are open to all community members to attend, just check the Brisbane City Council website for details.
When you are looking for free or cheap activities to entertain kids in the school holidays, be sure to check out what’s on at the Mitchelton Library or other libraries in the area.
And if all that reading and playing makes you peckish, then head to the deck at the back of the library where you will find the lovely Mitchelton Library Café which is the perfect spot to have a cuppa, get a snack and watch the world go by.
The Mitchelton Library is currently open five days a week (closed Monday’s, Sunday’s and public holidays) while the café is generally open the same days as the library, though opening hours may vary.
Imagination Factor at Mitchelton Library Park
Encourage a love of books, reading and community at Mitchelton Library Park. Take the time to speak with your children about what they see and hear and then maybe borrow or read a book to extend this conversation and interest. A bird nesting in the tree? A buzzy bee on a flower? A plane flying above? The options are endless.
Accessibility at Mitchelton Library Park
Mitchelton Library is accessible for wheelchairs and prams and contains an accessible toilet inside the library.
In regard to the playground, there is a concrete path leading from the carpark to the picnic shelter and further on to the accessible carousel, which is surrounded by soft fall. Unfortunately though, the rest of the playground has a chip bark base, with soft fall under the swings and at the end of the slide, making access difficult for some.

We adore the fact Mitchelton Library and its adjoining playground has a lovely community feel. There is space, shade, coffee and books, coupled with play equipment for all ages and a grassy spot for ball games.
