Fruit picking. There can be little doubt that we live in one of the most wondrous places in the world when it comes to farm-fresh and delicious year-round fruit. Here in Brisbane, we are spoilt for choice regarding local farms that offer pick-your-own fruit. Many Brisbane farms also offer a range of delicious and fun extras like farm animals and ice cream to make the outing memorable.
We 100% recommend calling or checking social media pages before attending any of the following locations. Open days can change, weather can cause PYO options to be put on hold and sometimes seasons start late and end early. All fees are correct at the time of writing but are subject to change.
Why Picking Your Own Fruit is So Good
There is something about taking the kids out to the fields or orchards and hand-picking their own fruit that makes it taste just that little bit sweeter. Straight from the farm itself, picking their own produce not only teaches kids about where their food actually comes from, but it is a fun outdoor activity that will gift you punnets of goodness to take home with you as well.
Tips for Parents
Before you head to the fields, below are a few tips that will help make your adventure more enjoyable.
- Make sure everyone wears flat shoes – a few hours out in the field are best navigated in comfortable, well-worn shoes.
- Pack the sunscreen, sleeved shirt and hat – strawberry fields rely on the weather and therefore offer no protection from the sun.
- Most farm’s have a Facebook page that offers up-to-date information on the current picking season. Always check this before heading out (or call if possible) to avoid any disappointment as each season’s dates can change depending on the weather.
- Pack in a picnic blanket – most farms have a area to relax in after you have picked your fruit. With hungry bellies and plump produce, most families want to enjoy the fruits of their labour as soon as the picking is done.
- Don’t forget to wash your fruit before you eat them if possible! Many farms have an area where you can do this.
