Rafting Ground Reserve has a great nature-inspired atmosphere and plenty of space to play and explore for your adventurous Brisbane Kids. This is the perfect space for lazy afternoon picnics and birthday parties under the trees.
Rafting Ground Reserve – playground
Yet another lovely free park for kids in Brisbane, Rafting Ground Reserve is a must-do picnic and play location in Brisbane’s west. This park is located about 5 minutes along Moggill Road when heading out of Kenmore and driving towards Bellbowrie.
Rafting Ground Reserve playground is great for warmer days with shade sails covering the entire structure and Eucalypts shading much of the grassed areas. It features swings, a slide, tunnels, cargo nets to climb and a mini pretend café. There is a cute koala and kangaroo artwork on the playground that the kids can poke their heads through for a cute photo opportunity too.
The scattered picnic tables kind of make you feel like you are wandering through an enchanted forest or a fairy-tale. It has two barbeque areas with electric hotplates and three undercover table areas (two have one table each and the other has three tables, which would be great for a party). There are also timber picnic areas scattered through the open reserve area. You can expect to hear whip birds and a variety of other birdlife and you can understand why this is popular place for a picnic.
As a point of interest, Rafting Ground Reserve is rich with local history, once a place where felled timber from surrounding forests was sent to and then placed in the river to be floated to the Toowong sawmill. There is a nod to this history in the log style tables scattered throughout the reserve, but also the feeling that this space was established long ago.
Show the kids the 1974 flood marker which sits in the reserve showing how far the water rose during this historic period in Brisbane.
Imagination Factor
The play café in this playground is different from others with lots of unique points of interest and is perfect for playing make-believe shops and restaurants. The fort structures and natural surroundings are great for games of hide-and-seek and tiggy, while the grassy spaces are ideal for kicking a ball.
Accessibility
Rafting Ground Reserve has wheelchair-accessible toilet facilities. The playground is unfenced. Picnic shelters and barbeques are located throughout. The fort-style play equipment is roofed and shade sails protect other areas. The entire park is sheltered by shady trees in many areas.
