With its consistent surf breaks, beachside surf club, kid’s playground, walkways and patrolled sandy beach all less-frequented then its neighbouring superstar, Tallebudgera Beach is a beloved secret treasure to the locals that know it well. A favourite for our team here at Brisbane Kids too, below are all the things we love about Tallebudgera Beach and its surrounding area.
Tallebudgera Beach – Getting There
Heading south along the M1, Tallebudgera Beach is located about 85km from Brisbane’s CBD. Depending on the time of day you are going and traffic conditions, it is a good idea to allow at least 1.5 hours travelling time to be safe. Once you hit the area, cross over Tallebudgera Creek Bridge and continue straight on, past Tallebudgera Creek Recreation Centre on your left before turning left at the lights at the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and Tallebudgera Drive.
One of the many gifts this beach gives its visitors is access to FREE beachside parking. Wonderful for all who plan a long day in this popular area, the parking does fill up very quickly and so heading down as early as you can (pre-8am is best) is definitely recommended!
If you manage to snag a park here, you will immediately spot the popular kids playground, surf club and toilets. Access to Tallebudgera Beach is directly behind this.
Tallebudgera Beach – Quick Facts
Affectionately called ‘Tally’ by the locals that know it best, Tallebudgera Beach is picture postcard perfect, what with its wide, uncrowded beach and pristine coastal waters. Part of the World Surfing Reserve, the popular beach is approximately 4km in length, with the Currumbin Creek rock wall and Burleigh Headlands to its north and the delightful Palm Beach joining it in the south.
Patrolled Swimming
The safest places to swim on this long stretch of coastal paradise is always between the flags! The Talle Surf Club have been manning the area and protecting our swimmers since their conception in 1946. The beach is patrolled daily from 8am – 5pm. The safest swimming is in the patrolled area clear of the inner bar rips that can occur at Tallebudgera Beach. While Burleigh Headland offers some protection from the north, the best time for a swim is in the morning – before any afternoon southerly breezes pick up.
Be aware: this beach can be potentially hazardous for swimming, owing to the inner bar rips and is particularly hazardous near any of the rock groynes. Stay between those flags!
Surfing and Water Sports
Surf’s Up Dude! If you have a keen surfer in the mist then it may be helpful to know that Tallebudgera is part of the World Surfing Reserve. Board-riders are frequently seen travelling the breaks in the area, although we would definitely recommend staying between the flag as conditions can get quite dicey at times. There are beach breaks along the length of the beach, both on the inner bar during low waves and on the outer bar during moderate swell.
This beach is subject to an increase in wave energy due to the reduced sheltering effects of Snapper Rocks and the orientation of the coast tends more easterly. There are excellent beach breaks along most of the beach providing a playground for body surfing, short boarding, long boarding, stand-up paddle boarding and other surf-related activities.
Dog-Friendly
For some, one of the main draw cards is knowing that Tallebudgera Beach is a dog-friendly beach! From Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7am and 6pm, our four-legged friends able to join us – as long as they are on their leash. For all other hours outside of these times though the beach reverts back to an off-leash dog-friendly zone.
Tallebudgera Beach – Playground
If the kids are all swum out and need a break from their sand-castle creations, Ronnie Long Park Playground offers the perfect shaded play solution. Located between the carpark and the entrance to Tallebudgera Beach, there are multiple lifesaver-themed play spaces on offer here for kids to explore.
Ronnie Long Park is split into two main zones – the tower and transport zones. The tower structure is impressively big with different slides off each end, climbing walls, fireman poles and spirals, multiple platforms and a maze built in underneath.
The other section of the playground features a smaller climbing frame with slide, a plane / dune buggy / vehicle of your imagination on a sandy base and two swings on soft fall making this a very toddler friendly playground. There’s also a net swing and rope merry go round in this section and soft fall underfoot.
The best part? The smaller play area is situated right in front of the Tallebudgera SLSC, meaning the deck there has a perfect vantage point of your kids playing while you eat.
Tallebudgera Beach – Food Options
When it comes to eating at Tallebudgera Beach, the options are endless. One of the most popular options for families on a budget is to simply make up your own picnic hamper and fill an esky with cold drinks to take with you on the day. The manicured, green grassy lawns out front of the surf club make for the perfect spot to set up, especially as the kids can make use of the playground in between bites too.
Another hugely popular option, with a very reasonable price tag too, is the beloved “Talle” Surf Club. The bistro has daily specials and features a children’s menu. In fact, if you are there on a Thursday night, kids eat free between 5 and 8pm! It is important to note though that the club is very popular during school holidays, so consider booking in advance to avoid disappointment. A courtesy bus operates 7 days a week, within a 5km radius of the club.
With other cafes and restaurants a short drive away, you won’t have to go far to find what your tummy desires. If you’re in the mood for some yummy baked goods and açaí bowls, visit Custard Canteen, located just 5 minutes away from the creek. The Portuguese tarts are supposed to be splendid.
