Kites Queensland meets twice a month on the foreshore of Clontarf to fly their kites and take in the sea air. Brisbane Kids can look forward to this regular and free kite flying event on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month weather permitting. This is the type of sport where the weather needs to be agreeable, so take this into consideration before you commit to any lengthy drive.
You can bring your own kite, check out the workshops on how to make a kite, or simply enjoy the relaxing kite flying atmosphere. Located at Pelican Park, on Hornibrook Esplanade in Clontarf. Pelican Park aside from being next to the sea also contains a fenced playground making it an ideal picnic spot for families with young children. If you do plan to picnic make sure you take a rug because more than once we have been caught out by a nest of ants.
Drone footage of kite flying at Pelican Park
How cool is this drone footage recently taken at Pelican Park? There are quite a few on YouTube and they show the spectacular flat space, so close to the water, which is the reason for its popularity.
Where can you spot the Redcliffe Kite Flying?
Check out their website for the exact map location, but Pelican Park is situated on a nice open space. There is a fish and chip shop, Service Station and bakery right across the road. This is a lovely destination in itself, even without the kite flying, but it is made extra special by this down to earth fun; perfect for Brisbane Kids and Brisbane Parents who want to experience something a little different and make the most of the wonderful Brisbane weather.
Pelican Park Playground
The Pelican Park playground is fenced and all abilities offering your kids an opportunity to have a run without you having to worry as much. We love this whole Redcliffe Peninsular and if you continue to drive along the coastal line you will be greeted with many more playgrounds, seaside cafes and small patches of beach.
Kites Queensland meet on the 2nd and 4th Sunday at Pelican Park. Weather permitting. The popularity of the days varies and sometimes there will be massive crowds of kite flyers and sometimes just one or two flyers. If you particularly love kite flying then make sure you attend the annual Kitefest which is held in the same location.
Please check out the Kites Queensland’s website to confirm dates before going especially with public holidays etc, just to be sure. www.redcliffekiteclub.org.au
