Located on the banks of the Brisbane River, approximately 8km from Ipswich CBD, Colleges Crossing has been a popular gathering place for families to relax and enjoy the great outdoors since 1894.
After again being wiped out by flood waters in 2022, the area has undergone significant refurbishment and now features a brand-new playground plus all the basics like toilets, drinking water and picnic shelters.
Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve
The reserve has also long been a favourite destination for water sports enthusiasts with easy access to the river making it a charming place to launch a canoe or a kayak and take a paddle. When the water is clear, it won’t take long until you find yourself in a peaceful stretch of river that feels a world away from the chaos of everyday life.
Although it might be tempting, it is not advised to swim in the river due to the presence of bull sharks (note the warning signs!).
Fishing is another popular option at Colleges Crossing where families line the shore with the prospect of catching a variety of species like Yellowfin Bream, Australian Bass and Garfish.
Brisbane Kids might want to bring a bucket and a little net to search for small creatures in the shallows and under rocks. An abundance of birdlife can also be spotted in the river with ducks, pelicans and swans among the frequent visitors.
There is very little shade near the river making personal sun protection like hats, sunscreen and shade tents an absolute must especially if you intend on staying for a few hours.
A huge grassed kick-about area encompasses the space between the playground and the river for those who prefer to stay dry. This field is a perfect spot for a game of soccer, football or cricket. Throwing frisbees and flying kites would also be a fun way to pass the time with the river providing an idyllic backdrop.
Concrete pathways snake through the parklands connecting the playground to the recreational spaces and provide suitable tracks for scooters, bikes and walking the dog.
Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve Playground
The newly constructed playground is strategically situated on the highest point of the reserve and contains a modern mix of climbing equipment and swings.
The standout feature is a giant climbing frame which encourages a hint of risky play and plenty of opportunities for exploration. Surrounding this is a smaller playground and slide with linking ropes and climbing wall. A generously sized birds nest swing offers spectacular views of the river below for both the pusher and the pushee.
Rounding out the mostly shaded space is some stepping stones, spinning disc, toddler bouncer and a dinosaur sandpit dig. There are toilets and several small picnic shelters located in close proximity to the playground making Colleges Crossing a good location to host a birthday party.
Imagination Factor at Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve
The peaceful surrounds of Colleges Crossing lend itself to nature play with much of the space being a blank canvas of greenery and flowing water. Mini adventurers can search for natural treasures along the rocky shoreline and hidden among the native foliage while creative types might feel inspired with a paintbrush or camera in hand.
Brightly coloured, towering totem poles recognise the area’s rich cultural history creating opportunities for storytelling and learning. The playground also acts as a source for imaginary play with its varying heights of climbing challenges and ground level activities to suit a range of ages.
Accessibility at Colleges Crossing Recreation Reserve
A network of flat, concrete pathways lead from the car park to most areas of the reserve making it pram and wheelchair accessible. The large, grassy area is also well maintained and should cause little obstacles for prams.
There are options for bench seating around the parklands however not all are covered by adequate shade.

What We Thought of College Crossing Recreation Reserve
Colleges Crossing Reserve is a great, multipurpose destination ideal for active days or lazy days – your Brisbane Kids can really choose their own adventure here.
We were delighted to see so many families enjoying the new facilities in a park which holds a special place in the hearts of locals who’ve seen it bounce back from devastation many times before.
Although we enjoyed our visit, it seems unlikely Colleges Crossing will return to its former glory with the absence of a cafe, BBQs (deemed too expensive to replace) and riverside picnic amenities. A designated food truck area will hopefully attract vendors and breath more life into the new look reserve in the nearby future.
