Step back to the swinging 60’s with these super easy and hugely popular Lava Lamps. This DIY project is so simple your Brisbane Kids can do it all themselves. Lava Lamps are a fun and exciting project for all ages and will keep them amused for hours.
You Will Need:
- A bottle or container with a sealing lid– 600ml soft drink bottles are perfect
- Vegetable Oil
- Water
- 10 drops of food colouring
- ¼ of an Alka Seltzer tablet
How To Make Your Own Lava Lamp:
Step 1
Fill the bottle 1/3 of the way with water and fill the remaining 2/3 with vegetable oil.
Step 2
Drop in 10 drops of food colouring.
Step 3
Drop in Alka Seltzer tablet.
Step 4
Seal the lid tightly on the bottle.
Wahoo instant Lava Lamp!!!!
NOTE: When bubbles finish fizzing, you can add another ¼ of an Alka Seltzer tablet to start the lamp again. When children have had enough of the Lava (this did not happen with our children- we ran out of Alka Seltzer!), let your child shake the bottle vigorously. The oil and water will create “bubbles”. These will float around and separate back into water and oil.
Lava Lamps are fantastic for children needing to settle or calm down. Once the bubbles have ceased, these lamps can be re-used as a calming tool or simply to entertain. Shaking and creating bubbles that separate again is quite entertaining and surprisingly therapeutic. A super simple activity for every Brisbane Kid!
