The Twits Stage Show, an adaptation of the popular Roald Dahl classic thanks to shake & stir theatre co. will have guests cringing, laughing and covering their faces with disgust.
Being long time Roald Dahl fans, and having previously read The Twits many times, our family was really looking forward to seeing The Twits live on stage (albeit a little apprehensive about how ugly they would look). And we were not disappointed. The show was great, and yes, the Twits were very ugly!
The Twits Stage Show from the beginning
As the lights dimmed in the intimate Cremorne Theatre, guests sat on the edge of their seats eagerly awaiting the arrival of Mr and Mrs Twit. After a brief introduction from the narrators, the audience was rewarded with the appearance of Mr Twit. Laughter immediately erupted when Mr Twit made some putrid noises, and it didn’t stop there. Little ones who enjoy toilet humour will be very pleased with the frequent toilet visits and regular bodily noises which occur throughout the show.
Showcasing five talented actors with minimal stage props, the story follows the gruesome and disgusting Mr and Mrs Twit as they prank their way through life. The three narrators double up as other characters throughout the show, and cleverly portray birds, mugglewumps and children, with the addition of a simple costume prop.
There are many laugh out loud moments, with modern gags and frequent references to retro tv programs, which had both children and adults, giggling in their seats. The very next moment faces were screwed up and sounds of ‘ewwwww’ echoed around the theatre at the vulgar antics of Mr and Mrs Twit.
What We Thought
Miss 7, who is quite sensitive, found the production a little overwhelming, though she sat and watched the whole show, and a little smile briefly visited her face from time to time. Surprisingly her favourite part, was one of the most disgusting – when Mrs Twit made spaghetti for Mr Twit (you will have to watch the show to see what ‘special’ ingredient makes the spaghetti so revolting!)
Mr 9 however, loved every minute of The Twits and enjoyed recognising the similarities between the book and the stage show, as well as spotting what was different. His favourite part was the topsy turvy moment toward the end, while us adults really enjoyed the subtle jokes (many of which may go over the kids heads).
