Explore Springbrook National Park
Enjoy a day filled with stunning views, cascading waterfalls, beautiful bush walks, and amazing wildlife when you explore Springbrook National Park in the winter. Covering over 6,725 hectares of the Gold Coast Hinterland, this lush rainforest is home to many natural delights. One of our favourite walks for families is the Natural Bridge Circuit, where visitors can complete a short walk to a natural arched cave with a waterfall cascading through a hole in the top – how amazing is that?!
Wander Around the Markets
One of the best things about exploring markets is you never know what bargains are awaiting you in the next aisle. Showcasing local arts and crafts, artisan food stuffs, gifts, toys, and more, you are bound to find something to meet your shopping needs at a market on the Gold Coast. Live music and entertainment often contribute to a vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere. Carrara Markets is a popular market choice, as is the Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets.
‘Dig IT’ at Thunderbird Park
May 2023 saw the unveiling of Queensland’s first mini excavator park for families – ‘Dig IT’ at Thunderbird Park at Tamborine Mountain. With four separate zones, children can climb aboard real diggers and take control as they dig holes, hook crocs, and demolish towers. There is so much work and fun to be had at Dig IT, you will find it hard to drag your kids away!
Embark on a Whale Watching Cruise
Spotting majestic humpback whales as they perform their annual migration to warmer waters off Queensland’s coast is something to behold. From June to November annually, whale watching cruises leave the Gold Coast in search of the playful whales. With whale sightings guaranteed on many cruises, it’s a fun and educational winter activity for both local and visiting families.
Take a Bush Walk
Whilst we’ve already mentioned Springbrook National Park, there are dozens of other incredible kid-friendly bush walks on the Gold Coast as well. There are four national parks to explore in this region, offering everything from ocean views to mountain vistas along the way. In winter, Binna Burra in Lamington National Park is a must-see, while Cedar Creek Falls at Tamborine Mountain is simply stunning on a sunny day.
Enjoy Some Beach Play
Visiting pristine Gold Coast beaches shouldn’t be restricted to just the summer months. Mild weather and plenty of sunshine makes sand play and splashing in the water a brilliant free activity to enjoy in winter. And the best bit is you won’t be dripping with sweat! Popular beaches among families include Currumbin Beach (and Elephant Rock) and the calm waters of Tallebudgera Creek.
Visit a Wildlife Park
Exploring nature and getting up-close to cute and cuddly animals can brighten anyone’s day. Catch a show, listen to keeper talks, feed the animals, or snap a selfie with your favourite animals at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary or David Fleay Wildlife Park.
Explore Gold Coast’s Best Playgrounds
The Gold Coast is blessed with fabulous playgrounds waiting for Brisbane Kids to explore. From steep slides to fast flying foxes and pedal monorails, not only can families enjoy playground fun in the sun, but the views are often spectacular. One of our absolute favourites is the refurbished Palm Beach Parklands, a nautical-themed destination playground like no other.
Spend the Day at a Theme Park
Many flock to the God Coast for the thrills of Queensland’s big theme parks. While wandering around the parks, going on rides, and watching shows can be fun at any time of the year, there is no doubting it is far more enjoyable in winter thanks to the cooler weather and smaller crowds. It is also a great time to save yourself time and money too.
