Instantly recognisable by its grand, sandstone buildings and jacaranda paved streets the University of Queensland St Lucia is a familiar Brisbane landmark but what you might not know is that it’s also home to the spectacular UQ Playground! This all-abilities playground encompasses the spirit of adventure and a passion for learning through its state of the art equipment and engaging layout that’ll have you coming back time and time again.
UQ Playground St Lucia Playground
UQ Playground (or UQ Educational and Sensory Playground as it’s also known) is an exciting and inclusive space for children of all ages with its towering slides, zippy flying fox, joyful musical instruments and gentle water play.
The main centre point is an impressive steel labyrinth which can be scaled through a series of internal stairs, ropes, nets and connecting bridges. Keen climbers will be rewarded at the 6 metre summit with a choice of either a tandem racing slide or twisted tube slide.
Attached to the tower are climbing nets, hanging rings and bars designed to test upper body strength, while the adjacent 40 metre flying fox is sure to satisfy the thrill seekers. Other features in the immediate area include a swing set with an adaptive swing and an inclusive carousel to encourage shared play opportunities.
A wander through the nature-inspired space leads to a dedicated junior zone with a toddler playground and huge sand pit with earthmovers and very own dinosaur dig! Neighbouring this is a button-controlled water spray zone that will delight on a hot Brisbane day. This section is also filled with oversized musical instruments and interactive games to promote creativity and collaboration which perfectly complements the university setting.
Within the recreational precinct you’ll also find a table tennis table, workout equipment and a super fun hedge maze suitable for small children.
Imagination Factor
The UQ Playground St Lucia is a multi-sensory delight with its combination of ultra-modern equipment and charming natural elements. Opportunities for pretend play can be seen across the play space, especially in the junior section with the archaeological excavation site and colourful totem poles.
Another source of inspiration can be found in the variety of ground coverings from soft sand to lush grass, rocky footpaths and timber runs which enhance the play experience.
Eager explorers will also notice famous quotes hidden throughout the play space with words from Albert Einstein and A.A. Milne sure to create interesting talking points.
Although not playable, the authentic Brisbane river ferry “Hamilton” located near the playground is also another great point of interest for inquisitive adventurers.
Accessibility
All facilities including the BBQs and accessible toilets are located on ground level and connected via either concrete or sand pathways. There are also paid disabled parking spaces located directly in front of the main playground with ramp access to the footpath.

What We Thought of UQ Playground
The UQ Playground St Lucia was based on feedback from children describing their “dream playground” which we think shows in the attention to detail, whimsical inclusions and focus on fun. It’s an all-ages playground that will impress Brisbane kids and their parents.
The university is busy during the semester; however, there are plenty of paid parking spaces and the playground is generally quiet, making it a delightful midweek destination for families with young children.
