Tucked away in the suburb of Richlands, you’ll find Kathleen Street Park. With a scooter track, play equipment, an open grass area and undercover picnic tables, it’s a space for the whole family to enjoy.
Kathleen Street Park playground
The first thing you notice when visiting Kathleen Street Park is the interesting scooter track with some exciting elements. Little Brisbane Kids learning to scoot can enjoy the flat pathway. At the same time, more experienced riders can attempt to navigate their way under arches, through a door, or over bumps and bridges. A collection of native gum trees partially shade the path, and there are two benches in the centre of the loop so parents can take a seat while remaining close to the action. Grass areas surround the track, and it is positioned away from the road.
Over in the playground is a standard swing, an infant swing, a spring rider shaped like a speedy blue motorbike and a spinning merry-go-round. There is also a unique piece of equipment known as a flipper, which encourages children’s balance, coordination, and strength as they stand on the edge then leap forward.
A series of connected forts make the playground well suited to younger and older children as there are many items to engage with. A metal ladder, moulded rock-climbing wall, stepping platforms, discs on a pole, and stairs provide different ways up and down from the forts. Three slides and a sliding pole make for fun ways back to the ground.
Older children can test their strength on the monkey bars or balance across the rope bridge. At the top of one of the forts is a steering wheel for children who love to be in the driver’s seat, while below the fort is a cafe window which served as a popular ice-cream store on the hot day we visited.
If your Brisbane Kid needs more space, there is a large grass field which would be excellent for a family game of soccer or football.
Currently there are NO toilet facilities at this park, though these often come later if there are enough requests. If you enjoy visiting this playground, we suggest you contact your Local Councillor or State Minister to see how they may be able to assist.
Imagination Factor at Kathleen Street Park
The connected forts are perfect for a game of ‘the floor is lava’ as the kids use their strength and skill to traverse the equipment without touching the ground. While on the scooter track, little ones can play posties, dropping off deliveries on each lap.
Accessibility
Unfortunately, this playground does not cater to all-abilities at this stage. There is a lack of pathways linking the areas, and no play equipment is specifically accessible.
