All aboard the reimagined RJ Richardson Park in Goodna, which offers a contemporary steamboat themed playground and a range of refurbished amenities to enjoy. Its scenic riverside setting and upgraded features make it an ideal spot for a child’s party.

RJ Richardson Park Playground

RJ Richardson Park (also referred to as Richardson Park) centres around a large and modern looking boat structure – a reference to the river’s historical role in transporting goods between Brisbane and Ipswich.

The playground has lots of visual appeal with its sleek exterior and use of colour on the surrounding rubber soft fall base. Young adventurers will be met with some climbing challenges in the form of curved ladders on the outside of the steamboat and a series of internal nets.

There are a few ground level activities to keep the toddlers occupied such as the gentle, short slides and tiny tunnels made for little bodies.

Designers have opted for a bird’s nest swing instead of a standard swing set which, although less baby friendly, leads to some nice opportunities for shared play. Additional features include two-way speakers, interactive steering wheel, seated and standing spinners, inclusive carousel and a 20m flying fox.

Unfortunately, there is a distinct lack of shade over the main structure, so remember to pack the hats and sunscreen and check the surface temperature of equipment before use.

The surrounding parklands boast ample shaded and unshaded picnic areas, water fountains and multiple electric BBQs. There is also some workout equipment for fitness enthusiasts to work up a sweat while taking in the views of the Brisbane River.

Imagination Factor at RJ Richardson Park

This park certainly leans on the tried-and-true “boat next to the water” playground design which provides a good base for imaginary play.

As playing pirates, mermaids and sea explorers is unlikely to go out of fashion any time soon, this makes it an enduring and popular theme. The steering wheel is a noteworthy inclusion with an exciting audio feature which is activated each time the wheel is turned.

Next to the main playground is also a small garden with rocky piles, sandstone blocks and a timber carved indigenous canoe which is designed to encourage nature play.

Accessibility at RJ Richardson Park

RJ Richardson Park includes accessible toilets, baby change facilities and accessible car parking which connects to the playground via concrete pathing.

As for the playground equipment, there is an inclusive orbit carousel which allows for an ability controlled spinning experience.

On the same street you’ll also find the JUST Goodna Aquatic Centre which offers learn to swim programs and a splash pool for kids.

If you are looking for some more playground fun nearby consider visiting Tucker Family Park in Bellbird Park, where you will find an impressive 10m tall cue tower, tunnel slide, walking track, sporting field and more.

A little further afield you will find the Redbank Plains Recreation Reserve boasting a 9m tall adventure tower, toddler play equipment, and skate park.

A popular community event is the local Goodna Jacaranda Festival where the city’s iconic and beloved purple blooms are celebrated in October each year.

What We Thought of RJ Richardson Park

This is a neat, little park which is sure to become a regular playdate spot for locals. The centrepiece steamboat looks impressive from the outside and contains some simple elements which aim to entertain a toddler to early primary school aged crowd.

We’d love a bit more sun protection and fencing around the playground but overall this is a positive upgrade for Goodna families.
