Exploring Brisbaneโs playgrounds is a fun, free activity any time of the year, which shouldn’t be impacted if you are visiting with a wheelchair. This comprehensive guide details which parks in Brisbane are wheelchair friendly, containing equipment specifically designed with wheelchairs in mind. From We-Go-Swings, to accessible carousels, play panels and Liberty swings, we have you covered next time you’re searching for a playground suitable for the whole family.
Table of Contents
Wheelchair Accessible Play Equipment
Playgrounds often boast accessible equipment, but they are not always accessible for those in wheelchairs. Here we take a look at playground equipment that IS accessible for those in a wheelchair.
We-Go-Swing
The we-go-swing is designed to be accessible and used by wheelchair users. To make it even more inclusive, no key is required, and wheelchair users can ride on the swing with others at the same time. This is a gentle swing, promising plenty of fun.
Accessible Carousel
Also known as a Universal Carousel or an All-abilities Spinner, this piece of equipment is flush with the ground, so wheelchair users can easily manoeuvre onto the carousel. While not all carousels contain a seat, many do, and they also have rails for users to hold onto while enjoying the ride.
Glider
Also known as a Sway Funยฎ Glider, this piece of equipment is accessed by a ramp, and like the name suggests, glides back and forth. Wheelchair users can ride alongside others and have fun swaying together.
Liberty Swing
The Liberty Swing was designed in 2003 and is an Australian innovation found around the world. Wheelchair users will need to be wheeled up the ramp and into position before the wheels are safely locked and the rider secured. After this the ramp is lowered, and the swing can be activated. A MLAK key is usually required to use a Liberty swing. ย While the Liberty Swing used to be very popular, the need for a key, and the fact only one person can use it at a time has seen a decrease in these at local playgrounds.
How Playgrounds Make this Wheelchair Friendly List

Crockatt Park
In order for the following parks to make this list of wheelchair friendly playgrounds, they must have at least one piece of equipment which can be accessed by a wheelchair user. We have also noted if accessible toilets are available and any other features which are wheelchair friendly.
Of course there may be elements at other playgrounds which may be accessible to particular wheelchairs or those who are able to transfer out of the chair, but for the purpose of this guide, we have focussed on equipment which can be used by those while in a wheelchair.
While we have noted some nearby public transport options, it’s important individuals utilise their own discretion when planning their visit via these routes, as they may not be suitable for all wheelchair users.
This guide is just a brief overview of accessible features at each playground. We recommend following the link to each parkโs detailed review (complete with photos) to decide if it’s suitable for your play needs.
While we endeavour to provide correct information at the time of writing, some things change. If you know of any updates or a new park we should add to the list, please get in touch with us.
